Atacama Equinox Hi-fi Celebration LE V Equinox
The Atacama Equinox has long been a staple rack for the audiophile combining fantastic value with a good level of performance.
To celebrate 10 years of the rack being in production Atacama has released a limited edition version with some key changes to improve it both sonically and aesthetically. Being based around the standard Equinox the Celebration has the same long list of positive attributes as the regular Equinox but there have been some key improvements made to upgrade it sonically as well as aesthetically.
These include aerospace grade aluminium isolation caps with neoprene gaskets, nomafoam filled legs to reduce ringing and ball bearing isolation for each shelf. The excellent high gloss lacquer also is a marked improvement on the standard textured black finish.
Sitting side by side it is quite amazing what a few subtle changes can transform a product. The standard version has always been accepted as a reasonable looking rack that fits well in to the lounge. The celebration is in a different league aesthetically, the standard looking suitably dowdy in comparison. The smart new gloss paint finish complemented by the spun metal caps really works well and makes it look at least 2 price levels higher than the standard.
As a reference point let’s start with the Equinox, music is Smooth, with decent levels of detail, meaty bass line and a dramatic step up from simply putting your equipment on the side board. The music is more percussive and defiantly more articulate. Changing over to the LE is quite a revelation. The image suddenly increases in size and placement becomes much better. The Bass is tighter with increased snap and the music bounds along with increased vigour and energy. The standard rack sounds a little cumbersome in comparison, which it isn’t; it simply shows the agility of the Celebration.
The standard equinox is still a great value rack offering decent levels of performance, what the Celebration offers is bags of extra refinement and detail. If you are in the market for a stylish great sounding rack that won’t break the bank you should defiantly consider the Equinox LE (or if your budget won’t stretch to that then the standard Equinox is still cracking good value.) For those of you who already have an Equinox and there are many thousands of you out there that do and are looking to upgrade a component in your system could do a lot worse than looking at the Le or get on the phone and pester Atacama to see if they will make an upgrade kit.
